Orbit the Milky Way with the camera is very simple, make sure that galaxies are turned on at the options menu, then at the simulation:

1- Press 'F1' key (go to the Sun).
2- Press the right mouse button (previous object).

----------- Update to V1.1 and later:

Mouse Navigation is not active by default, these are the right steps:

1- Press 'F1' key (go to the Sun).
2- Click on 'Previous Object' Arrow.
Alternatively, press 'Space Bar' to enter Mouse Navigation mode, and then click the right mouse button (previous object).
